10 Keyboard Shortcuts Everyone Should Know

Keyboard Shortcuts

If you are anything like me, you probably use a number of different applications every day. On a normal day, navigating between software, internet browsers and email clients like Outlook is just part of your usual workflow. I'm a big advocate of keyboard shortcuts because they are simply the easiest ways to get things done faster.

To really get the hang of keyboard shortcuts, you have to train yourself to use them instead of reaching for the mouse. While this might seem counter productive at first, you will see definite improvements when you find it gradually becoming second nature. You won't leave the mouse completely, but you will find that keyboard shortcuts make you faster with both!

In truth, it is much easier and faster to press 2 or 3 buttons on a keyboard than it is to navigate through a number of menus. Once you learn a few of them, you will experience a noticeable improvement in your productivity because no time is wasted uneccesarily reaching for your mouse.

The purpose of keyboard shortcuts is to allow you to only use the mouse when it is necessary to do so.

Here are 10 of the most common keyboard shortcuts that we think every computer user should know.

If you are wanting to learn more shortcuts for specific operating systems and software applications, here are a few tools to help you get started:
  • Keyrocket for Windows, and Eve on Mac will display the shortcut for whatever you are using your mouse to do. For example, if you use your mouse to click File>Save, the corresponding shortcuts (Ctrl + S) will be shown to you.
  • For specialised software, you can use shortcutfoo which teaches you shortcuts for Photoshop, Visual Studio and Excel.
